Working group established for endangered koalas
It’s terrible but official: koalas are now listed as endangered in NSW. The listing came after nominations in 2020 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Humane Society International (HSI), and WWF-Australia.
According to IFAW, around 15% of the NSW koala population was lost in the 2019/20 bushfires, but even more devastating is the fact that up to two thirds of the population has been lost in the last twenty years, due mainly to drought, bushfires and manmade causes such as habitat loss.
A working group is being established in the Snowy Monaro region to help preserve our own unique koala population. Please stay tuned: we’ll share more information with you on this as soon as we can.
