LAOKO member publishes bushfire recovery book

Badja resident and LAOKO member, Paula Boer, has published a book about her experiences during the 2020 Black Summer bushfires.

In early 2020 fires swept through her entire 500-acre property, located at Badja in the Snowy Monaro region. Paula’s latest book, Bushfire Recovery at Badja, captures her observations of life on the property from snuffling echidnas to mobs of kangaroos, tiny ladybirds to colourful butterflies, intricate orchids to towering eucalypts.

The book incorporates over 1,300 photographs, covering more than 400 species, labelled with both their common and scientific names.

This beautiful short video captures LAOKO member Paula Boer's desire to give hope to others who have experienced bushfires, as well as show the resilience of nature.

During the fires, the wildlife relied on Paula to help and she has subsequently signed her property up as a wildlife sanctuary with Humane Society International (HSI). HSI has approved a grant for a wombat release site at the property, which, somewhat sadly, is an ideal site since there are few  wombats left to claim territory there. Paradoxically, it has been too wet lately to begin construction! But we really do look forward to seeing the completion of this much-needed release site for our current wombats in care.

Thanks to Paula, a portion of the sales of Bushfire Recovery at Badja will be donated to LAOKO. Support a good cause and acquire this beautiful book by purchasing online on Paula’s website or at Cooma Pet Shop.
